1. Rifka has ill feeling for Ilya because he is a Russian peasant and that reminds her of the journey she took and all the problems that happened the past year. So she blames her leaving Russia and her hair missing on him. Ilya also reminds her of the pogroms that happened. As stated on pages 100 and 101. “Here sitting before me was the reason we had fled our homeland. He was the reason for my being alone for so long, separated from my family. The reason I had the typhus. The reason I had lost my hair. The reason Uncle Zeb was dead and all your lives were in danger… If I go back, they would kill me. His father or his uncle, his cousin or his neighbor, they will make a pogrom, and they will kill me.”
2. A greenhorn is a person that is not as educated as everyone else. For example, Karen Hesse said that she was a greenhorn because if you didn't know what banana is you would be a greenhorn. To me greenhorns are naïve kind of like Rifka was with the oranges. I believe that’s what Karen Hesse want us to get at.

1. Rifka has ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him at the dinning hall because Ilya is a Russian peasent. The reason Rifka cares that Ilya is a Russian peasent is because he is the reason they had fled there homeland, and he is the reason she had Typhus, and he is the reason Rifka lost her hair , and he is the reason that Uncle Zeb died and the reason Tovah’s family is in danger
2. A greenhorn is an imagrant that doesnt know much about the land and surroundings, and who is foollish and can get ripped off. Karen Hesse explains it on pg.106 when Saul says “Humph I guess your not such a greenhorn”

1. Rifka does not like Ilya because she found out that he was a Russian peasant. Rifka does not like Russian peasants because they would start pogroms and steal, beat and even murder most of the Jews in their town. Rifka soon understands that Ilya is harmless and he becomes her friend.
2. On page 106 Saul says that a greenhorn is a immigrant who gets of a boat and doesn’t know what lots of stuff is. Saul thought Rifka would be a greenhorn because he thought she had never a banana before. But in Antwerp she had lots of bananas and learned that you peel it not bight into the banana with the peels still on it.

1. Rifka has ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him at the dining hall because at first she sees him as the enemy. When Rifka realizes he is a Russian peasant, she blames him for all the terrible things that happened to her since she and her family left home. She thinks he is the reason she had typhus, was separated from her family, lost her hair, and the reason her Uncle Zeb was dead.
2. On page 106, Karen Hesse explains what a greenhorn is when Saul said, “It’s when you come off the boat and you don’t know what a banana is.” Saul thought he could make a fool out of Rifka with the banana because he didn’t think she knew how to peel or eat bananas, but he was surprised when she told him about eating bananas before in Antwerp.

1.Rifks has ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him because he is a Russian peasant and her family hates everything russian but she does end being okay with it. She is also ill towards ilya because he is not eating anything so he would be sent back to russia. How could anybody not like America.
2. Karen Hess describes a green horn as a person who comes into a new country not knowing what things are. In the book it says "When a person comes a boat not knowing what a banana is." JS#23

1. Rifka dosn't like ilya at first becouse he is a russian pesant. Russian pesants almost killed her back in berdicheve.
2. A greenhorn is when tou are in a new place and you don't know anything about it. You can be easily tricked. For example on page 106 it says "Whats a greenhorn?" I asked. It's when you come off a ship and don't know what a bannana is." Saul said. What he is saying is you don't knows the ways in a new place.

1. Rifka has ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him at the dining hall because on page 100 it says that he was a little Russian Peasant. She said that he “was the reason we had fled our homeland. He was the reason for my being alone for so long, separated from my family. The reason I had had typhus. The reason I had lost my hair. The reason Uncle Zeb was dead and all your lives were in danger.” Rifka didn’t want anything to do with him. Rifka basically blamed Ilya for everything bad that has happened that have kind of been involved with Russians.
2. A greenhorn is when someone is new to something or an immigrant. Karen Hesse explained by saying on page 106, “It’s when you come off the boat and you don’t know what a banana is.” For example, Saul gave Rifka a banana; he thought she would just try to eat it without peeling it, but Rifka already knew what a banana was, so she peeled it and ate it. Saul tried to trick Rifka. She wasn’t a greenhorn.

1. Rifka has ill feelings toward Ilya in the dining hall because he is a Russian. In fact he is Russian peasant. Russians did not treat Jews as an equal. So Rifka and her family moved to America. “He was the reason she was separated from her family for so long. He was the reason for uncle Zeb’s death. And he was the reason for her having typhus.”
2. A greenhorn is when you’re a brand new immigrant. The author explains it like “it when you come off the boat and don’t know what a banana is.”

1. Rifka had ill feelings for Ilya because she found out that he was a Russian peasant and he was the reason she had to leave Russian. On page 100 she says "He was the reason for my being alone for so long, separated from my family. The reason I had typhus. The reason I lost my hair. The reason uncle Zeb was dead and all our lives were in danger." Which means that all of that stuff happened because of the Russians and he is one of them so she is saying that he is like them.
A greenhorn is when you're new from someone and people can trick you very easily. Karen Hesse explained it as "if you get off a boat and you don't know what a banana is."

1. Rifka has ill feelings about Ilya when she first meets him because he looked like a small version of the Russian soldier at the train station and Rifka wanted nothing to do with a person like that.
2. A greenhorn is a person who is novice or an amateur which means they are a beginner or a learner. Karen Hesse explains it by writing the scene about the banana peel and Saul’s trick because she shows how Saul might’ve been a greenhorn and gotten fooled by the banana peel. Rifka has ill feelings about Ilya when she first meets him because he looked like a small version of the Russian soldier at the train station and Rifka wanted nothing to do with a person like that.

1When Rifka first meets Ilya she feels ill feelings because the Jews were mistreated by Russians. Ilya is Russian. So at first she thinks back to the time Russians mistreated her and blames him in her mind.
2 On page 106 it states that Saul said that Rifka is not such a greenhorn becaue she knows what a banana is. Karen Hesse explains it like when you come off a boat to America and "you don't know what a banana is" which means you don't understand the culture.

1. Rifka has ill feelings about Ilya because he is a Russian peasant, and Russian peasants had burned down there house in Berdichev.
2. A greenhorn is someone that is new to something. For example, on page 106 Rifka is new to America but she says that she isn't a greenhorn.

1. Rifka has ill feelings toward Ilya when she first meets him because Ilya is a russian pessant and the russians are the people that drove Rifka and her family out of the country in the first place and she thinks that all of the Russian peassents are mean because that is all the she knows about them.
2. A greenhorn is someone that does not know a lot about the things that surround her because her brother tried to prove thet she is a greenhorn by giving her a banana that has a peel and he thought that she would not take of the peel and eat it plain but since she was in antwerp she knew to peel it.
1. Rifka has ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him because on p. 100 it says, “Here Tovah sitting in front of me is the very reason we left Russia,” and on p. 101 it says, “I hated what he stood for.”
2. A greenhorn is some one who a lot of the time is an immigrant who does not know anything about the new place that they’re at. Karen Hesse describes a greenhorn on p. 106 as someone who comes off the boat and doesn’t know what a banana is.
pp 22 1. Rifka has ill feeling toward Ilya because Ilya was not eating at all because he was Russian peasant he wanted to go back to Russia where he used to live. Rifka was eating more then he was and Rifka got mad at Ilya for not eating so she forced him to eat the food so he would not strave to death.
2. A greenhorn is someone that is new beginner. So in the story Rifka is a greenhorn to coming to the new United States of America. So is Ilya he is a greenhorn too.
PP 22
1) In the book Letters from Rifka, Rifka has ill feelings towards a young boy named Ilya when she first meets him. She has ill feelings toward this boy because he is a Russian peasant and that is the reason that she had to leave her so long. Why she got typhus. The reason she lost her hair. The reason why her Uncle Zeb was dead. But Ilya didn’t do any of that it was the other Russian peasants. That is why Rifka had ill feelings towards Ilya when she first meets him.
2) In the book Letters from Rifka, the word/nickname greenhorn is mentioned and used. The author of the book is Karen Hesse exsplains that word. To me it means that a person not stupid but is just new to something and dosen’t know to much about it. Immigrants are usual called greenhorn when they enter a new place. An explanation is on page 105 and 106 where Saul thought that Rifka was a greenhorn and gave her a banana thinking that she would bite into the peel and not peel it. That is one way that Karen Hesse describes the word/nickname greenhorn.
